Did you know that you can accidentally void the insurance coverage that you pay so much hard earned money for?  Insurance policies almost universally include two provisions that can cause problems for insureds if they are not followed, a duty to promptly notify the carrier of a claim and a duty not to prejudice the carrier’s defense of the claim.  Thus, even if you think a claim is totally baseless, is a shakedown, or is just plain silly, do not take it upon yourself to ignore it, try to resolve it on your own, or do anything other than talk to competent counsel who can help you navigate all of these potential minefields.  The worst possible outcome of a “baseless” claim is that you inadvertently blow your insurance coverage, leaving you holding the bag to defend, and in some cases, pay a claim that would have otherwise been covered by your insurance policy.
